About P.E.O.


P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is a women's organization that helps other women achieve their educational goals.  Founded in 1869 by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College, P.E.O. today has over 250,000 members in the United States and Canada.

The mission of P.E.O. is to promote educational opportunities for women.  P.E.O. has six philanthropies that include ownership of a women's college, Cottey College, and five programs that provide higher educational assistance:

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund
P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education
P.E.O. Scholar Awards
P.E.O. STAR Scholarship

Thanks to P.E.O., as of 5/2013, we can say:

More than 8,600 women from all 50 states, 4 provinces and from over 85 countries have graduated since the first class in 1887.  Cottey has been owned and operated by P.E.O. since 1927.

$235 million in financial assistance has been awarded to 90,400 recipients of ELF, IPS, PCE, PSA, and STAR projects.

P.E.O. Educational Loan Funds loans are $143.6 million since 1907.
P.E.O. International Peace Scholarships are $29.6 million since 1949.
P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education grants are $42.9 million since 1973.
P.E.O. Scholar Awards are $16.2 million since 1991.
P.E.O. STAR Scholarships are $2.7 million since 2009.
